Tammy’s Baby Shoppe in Manteca is aiming at being part of an international effort to set a Guinness World Record. Its vehicle to that goal: cloth diapers.
The worldwide event is being called The Great Cloth Diaper Change: Guinness World Record Diaper Changing Challenge to be held Saturday, April 23.
“I think it’s exciting. It’s going to be a fun event,” said Baby Shoppe owner Tammy Holland of the cloth diaper-change Guinness challenge.
The date was chosen to coincide with the annual observance of Earth Day this year on Friday, April 22, “so it’s a green thing,” Holland said of the cloth diaper-changing fun effort.
The challenge is to set the world record for the most cloth diapers changed simultaneously at a specifically given time. In Manteca, the event will be at 9 a.m. Pacific Standard Time.
“If you’re in New York, it will be at 12 o’clock,” Holland said.
There will be participants as well in several continents of the world joining the world’s “cloth diaper community” in setting the record at that particular time, she said.
Each participating location has to have 25 babies, with one adult participant, to be part of the worldwide challenge. Holland figured they will have 30 the day of the event.
Each participant has to fill out a form that could be downloaded on the store’s web site at www.tammysbabyshop.com or at www.greatclothdiaperchange.com. You can also call the Baby Shoppe at (209) 239-5537 and Holland will either fax you a copy of the form or send it by e-mail.
Due to space constraints, pre-registration is advised, according to information from Tammy’s web site. If space is available the day of the event, on-site registration will be accepted but cannot be guaranteed.
Following are the event rules for participants:
• Arrive on time.
• For the Guinness record to be set, each baby must be changed from a cloth or disposable diaper into a reusable cloth diaper. Holland said the cloth diaper must be purchased either online or in a retail store. “Unfortunately, homemade diapers that are not commercially available cannot be used. This is a very strict rule from Guinness World Records,” she said.
• All babies and toddlers must be 39 inches or shorter.
• Each baby must be paired with exactly one adult participant.
Forms filled out by participants may be mailed, faxed or brought to Tammy’s Baby Shoppe located at 127 North Main Street, Manteca CA 95336, tel. (209) 239-9050. The store is located in the former J&J Printing in downtown Manteca.
Participants must also bring on the day of the event $1 (or more if they so desire) to donate to the Real Diaper Association, the 501c(3) non-profit organization that is dedicated to spreading the word about reusable cloth diapers.
