MODESTO (AP) — Two adults and a child died after a wrong-way driver plowed into oncoming traffic on Highway 99 in Stanislaus County.

The wrong-way driver was going northbound in the southbound lanes just north of Pelandale Avenue when they crashed into a Toyota Camry around 12:30 a.m. Saturday, according to Sgt. Nelda Banuelos, with the Modesto office of the California Highway Patrol.

Within a few feet of the first crash, the wrong-way driver hit another vehicle head-on, killing a child and an adult in the second vehicle. The wrong-way driver also died in the crash, Banuelos said. All three people were declared dead at the scene.

A person from the first car struck, the Toyota Camry, was sent to the hospital as a precaution.

Southbound lanes of Highway 99 at Pelandale Avenue were closed for about four hours as officials investigated the crash.

The investigation is ongoing. The CHP asks anyone with information to contact the Modesto office.

None of the identities of the victims has been released. No other information was provided.
