4 NY MOTORCYCLISTS CLOCKED GOING 138 MPH: GREENVILLE, N.Y. (AP) — Authorities say four motorcyclists in upstate New York were clocked driving nearly 140 mph on an interstate and issued speeding tickets.
State police say the four men registered 138 mph on a trooper's radar gun in a 65-mph zone on Interstate 84 on Sunday morning in Greenville. The town is on the New Jersey border 60 miles northwest of New York City.
Other troopers farther east on I-84 were alerted and stopped the bikers in the neighboring town of Wawayanda.
Police say the four men ranging in age from 32 to 45 were ticketed and ordered to appear in court on Aug. 14.
VAN BACKS OVER MASS. WOMAN REPEATEDLY, KILLING HER: LYNN, Mass. (AP) — Authorities and witnesses say a van backing out of a parking spot in Massachusetts repeatedly struck a 60-year-old woman pushing her baby granddaughter in a carriage, killing the woman.
Lynn police say the baby was taken to a hospital but did not appear to be seriously hurt.
The woman was struck Sunday after two teens asked her for directions so they could call for a ride. Eighteen-year-old Moises Baez and 17-year-old Amanda Arsenault tell The Daily Item they watched the van run over the woman several times and helped pull the baby to safety. Baez says he yelled at the driver to stop.
BABY'S ASHES TAKEN IN ALA PURSE SNATCHING: MONTGOMERY, Ala. (AP) — A purse snatched from the arms of a young woman in Montgomery, Ala., contained the ashes of her deceased newborn baby.
Police spokeswoman Martha Earnhardt said Monday that Monica Thomas of Montgomery was carrying the cremated remains of son Jamar Simmons Jr. when she was knocked down by a robber who took her handbag Friday night.
The child only lived a couple hours after his birth, and Earnhardt says Thomas was carrying the remains in her purse because she planned to bury them at her mother's gravesite the following morning, on her 20th birthday.
The ashes were in a small box with the child's name and birthdate on the front.
NJ WOMAN STRANDED AT SEA 16 HOURS, SWIMS TO SHORE: WOODBURY, N.J. (AP) — A college student from southern New Jersey says she was stranded at sea for 16 hours while swimming off Honduras and is now safe.
Heather Barnes went to collect coral samples for a project she's doing at New College of Florida at 4 a.m. Friday. She says she started to cramp and got pushed out to sea.
Writing on Facebook, Barnes says she realized she had to swim to try to reach safety. She says she eventually reached land, where two people gave her water and used a kayak to take her back to the resort where she was staying.
Barnes is in Florida recovering from sunburn and jellyfish stings.
Her mother, Jennifer Dukelow of Woodbury, tells WPVI-TV in Philadelphia that she prayed until her daughter called late Friday
A PILOT KILLED, WIFE INJURED IN CRASH AT TAHOE: SOUTH LAKE TAHOE (AP) — One person has been killed and another injured in a small plane crash at South Lake Tahoe, Calif.
El Dorado County Sheriff's Lt. Pete Van Arnum says the male pilot was killed but that his wife, the lone passenger on the plane, is expected to survive her injuries. She was airlifted to Renown Regional Medical Center in Reno.
Van Arnum says the couple is from Palo Alto, Calif. No names have been released.
Federal Aviation Administration spokesman Ian Gregor says the single-engine Mooney M20 crashed in a wooded area about 11:15 a.m. Monday after taking off from the South Lake Tahoe Airport.
MICHAEL MOORE FILES FOR DIVORCE AFTER 21 YEARS: BELLAIRE, Mich. (AP) — Filmmaker Michael Moore has filed for divorce after 21 years of marriage to Kathleen Glynn, his collaborator on the Oscar-winning "Bowling for Columbine" and other projects.
Moore filed a divorce complaint June 17 in Michigan's Antrim County, where the couple has a lakefront home. It says their relationship has broken down and "there remains no reasonable likelihood that the marriage can be preserved."

POLICE: TEXAS TEEN FABRICATED ABDUCTION REPORT: LUBBOCK, Texas (AP) — A 15-year-old girl fabricated a story claiming three men abducted and held her captive in a West Texas home, although at least one of the men could be facing sexual assault charges in the case, police said Monday.
Lubbock Police Sgt. Jason Lewis said the girl likely was involved in prostitution and that she was not held against her will at the house in the city.
He did not know if all three men would be charged with sexual assault.
"We do have suspects," Lewis said. "We do know who they are. The charges are coming."
The girl ran away from home in Amarillo in mid-May and came to Lubbock a week or two later.
She had told officers she was abducted from Amarillo about two months ago and held at the home. She said she crawled out a window at the home on Friday and fled to a McDonald's restaurant where she called police.
Moore and Glynn married in Flint in 1991. Glynn is listed as producer or executive producer for many of Moore's hard-hitting documentary films, including "Fahrenheit 9/11," ''Sicko" and "Capitalism: A Love Story."
ROCKWELL EXHIBIT MARKS TIE BETWEEN MORMONS, SCOUTS: SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — Twenty-three original, Boy Scout-themed Norman Rockwell paintings are on display in Salt Lake City to celebrate the 100-year relationship between Scouting and the Mormon church.
The Rockwell exhibition that opened over the weekend at the Church History Museum will run through year's end. A second exhibition, set to run through October 2014, is titled "A Good Turn Daily: 100 Years of Scouting and the Aaronic Priesthood."
The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints is the largest organization to charter Boy Scout troops, with Mormon-sponsored groups enrolling more than 430,000 youths last year.
Rockwell's relationship with the Boy Scouts began in 1912 when he started as a staff artist for Boys' Life magazine. The American painter illustrated 50 annual Boy Scout calendars, with the last one published in 1976.
