POLICE ZAP GIRL WITH TASER AT MONTEREY COUNTY FAIR: MONTEREY (AP) — Police say they used a Taser on a 14-year-old girl after she attacked an officer at the Monterey County Fair.
Officers were questioning two teenage girls Saturday night after receiving reports that they had been involved in a fight.
Sonne says the 16-year-old became combative and an officer tackled her, then the 14-year-old jumped on the officer’s back and another officer shot her with his stun gun.
Both girls were taken to juvenile detention on allegations of battery on a police officer and resisting arrest before they were released to their families.
Sonne says there will be an investigation into the use of force.
6 DEAD AFTER SPEEDING CAR SLAMS INTO TREE IN TEXAS: DALLAS (AP) — A speeding car slammed into a tree after losing control along a Dallas roadway, killing all six people inside, police said Monday
The crash occurred Sunday night in a southeast Dallas residential area, said Dallas police officer Monica Cordova.
The victims were two teenage boys, two men and two women ranging in age from 15 to 23.
The Dallas school district said three of those killed were high school students.
The 20-year-old driver lost control after the back passenger-side tire of the Chevrolet Impala hit a curb, Cordova said. The vehicle slid across three lanes before hitting a tree in the median.
Speed was a major contributing factor in the crash, but not alcohol, Cordova said.
LIGHTNING KILLS BOY SWIMMING IN PENNSYLVANIA CREEK: PEACH BOTTOM, Pa. (AP) — Authorities say a lightning strike has killed a boy who was swimming in a central Pennsylvania creek.
Lancaster Newspapers reports that three boys were swimming in the Conowingo Creek in Fulton Township when a storm moved through Sunday afternoon.
Fire Chief Tracy Tomlinson said crews used an ATV to cross a field to reach the boys. Two of them were taken to Lancaster General Hospital and then to Hershey Medical Center.
The Dauphin County coroner’s office says one boy was pronounced dead at the Hershey hospital Sunday night.
The condition of a second boy who was injured hasn’t been released. The third boy apparently wasn’t hurt.
POLICE: VIRGINIA GIRL, 2, LEFT IN A VAN, DIES: ROANOKE, Va. (AP) — Police say a 2-year-old girl who was left in a van for an extended period of time has died in Virginia.
Police spokesman Scott Leamon says in a news release that authorities received a report of an unresponsive child at 4:27 p.m. Sunday in Roanoke. Emergency responders pronounced the girl dead at the scene.
Leamon says a preliminary investigation indicates that a parent accidentally left the girl in a car seat in the van. The van was parked in the driveway of a residence.
According to the National Weather Service, temperatures in Roanoke reached 90 degrees Sunday afternoon.
Leamon says the investigation is continuing. He did not say whether the heat was responsible for the death or whether anyone would be charged.
MOM, 3 KIDS AMONG 5 KILLED IN PLANE CRASH: ERIE, Colo. (AP) — Four of the five people killed in a small-plane crash north of Denver were identified Monday as a woman and her three children.
The Weld County coroner says Tori Rains-Wedan, 41, and her three sons, 15-year-old Mason Wedan and 11-year-old twins Austin and Hunter, died in the crash Sunday, the Boulder Daily Camera reported (http://bit.ly/1A0SdkD ).
Officials haven’t named the pilot of the Piper PA-46 who also died when the plane crashed about 11:50 a.m. in a grassy field near the Erie Municipal Airport, about 20 miles north of Denver.
Rains-Wedan owned Educated Minds, a company that offers education classes to real estate agents, the newspaper reported.
Grief counselors would be provided to students and staff Tuesday at the schools the boys have attended, Boulder Valley School District spokesman Briggs Gamblin said.
The six-passenger plane crashed a few hundred yards northwest of the runway, Erie Police Cmdr. Lee Mathis said. Three people were declared dead at the scene, and two were taken to hospitals.
