Johnie Thomas moved to Ripon in the 1950s.

That was about 60 years ago. He’s still here and, on July 22, will celebrate his 100th birthday.

“It’s been great to live in Ripon,” Thomas said at Tuesday’s Ripon City Council meeting.

He was honored with a proclamation from the City of Ripon by Mayor Dean Uecker and his colleagues. They also sang “Happy Birthday” to Thomas, who was joined by family at this special occasion in the Council Chambers.

Uecker honored the long-time resident for his many accomplishments including his volunteer work at the Ripon Senior Center.

“Johnie has given generously of his time and attributes his longevity to hard work and serving the Lord,” said Uecker, reading the proclamation.

Following the meeting, family said that Thomas, who was born in 1913, wasn’t too old to still enjoy cake and ice cream, taking him out afterward to continue the birthday celebration.
