A city maintenance worker discovered a suspicious looking suitcase shortly before 2 p.m. Monday near the baseball diamond at the Ripon Community Center in the 300 block of Fourth Street and summoned police.

A questionable device was seen in what was described as a strange position inside the suitcase.  First Sergeant Steve Merchant said “out of an abundance of caution” the area was cordoned off and assistance was sought from the Manteca Police Department Bomb Squad. 

Bomb squad technical officers responded to the scene and the suitcase was examined with the contents being removed, determining the device was not an explosive. 

Sgt. Merchant said the case is currently under investigation.
