Editor, Manteca Bulletin,
I never have written a letter to the editor before. Today I find myself tapping out a few notes on behalf of candidate for S.J. County School Superintendent, Dr. Jeff Tilton. My letter is written with no knowledge of school politics or education. I just know Jeff from being a kid growing up in Manteca. He was always involved in coaching, educating, and mentoring my generation.
When I think of Jeff Tilton, one thing that sticks out to me from those days was that he was nice to me. I say that, meaning, he is a few years my senior and you know how a lot of times older guys can be not so pleasant to younger aged peers. That is not Jeff. He was always one who was trying to help the younger kids that he coached or taught. He is a light-hearted type who is interested in helping.
I recall showing up to football practice my freshmen year and finding Dr. Tilton was Manteca Buffalo "Coach" Tilton. Coach Tilton was always patient with me, as I had never played "tackle football." He was decisive and a great leader. He was a trusted mentor so much so that a number of us shaved our heads for team spirit instilled by Coach Tilton. We went undefeated and were VOL champs. We were hairless, but we were unified. That was his knack.
Over the past three decades, his credentials say it all. He has done nothing but put in the hours to build his educational career and propel himself to where he is now — on the cusp of starting a new generation for SJ County and its school system and children.
Things only get better with time, experience and education. Jeff, Dr., Coach, Tilton, always believed in me. I turned that positive energy from Jeff and others like him, from a talkative hyper teen into a respected radio broadcaster for the past 25 plus years in our area. His nurturing in my teen years, no doubt, helped me achieve my dream. With your help and vote he will achieve San Joaquin County's educational dreams. Thanks Coach.
