Wants Ben Cantu to fill vacancy

Editor, Manteca Bulletin,

Recently, there has been considerable discussion concerning the Manteca City Council vacant seat created by Steve DeBrum giving up his seat after being elected mayor. It can be filled with a special election or a council appointment. I believe another costly election is unnecessary. There are many talented residents in Manteca who can fill the position.

One such person is Ben Cantu. Through election campaigning Ben has gotten a bum rap. His opposition has made him look like the “bad guy.” Few people understand Ben, but I can tell you he cares deeply about his community and its people. Whenever there is a project that will improve the Family City, Ben will roll up his sleeves and go to work. Just recently he was seen packing up food and books for our service members in the Middle East at the American Legion Post 249 event. Additionally, Ben is planning a complete remodel of the American Legion facility.

I have worked with Ben in community and youth activities for several years. It is through Kiwanis that we support scholarships, high school basketball as well as track and field. Ben provides our club leadership in organizing the community Easter egg hunts and annual pancake breakfasts. He supports Valley CAPS and the French Camp School Student Mentoring Program.

Ben has invaluable experience and knowledge of the inner workings of city politics and civil law, having served as our city planner. He came up through the planning and department where he gained 34 years of municipal experience. He understands the people and groups of Manteca and works toward a balanced view of our neighborhoods. He favors growth but in a planned approach, whereas previous councils have sold out to building contractors. Ben will stand his ground and insist on thorough planning as prescribed by zoning laws and the payment of city fees. The needs of our neighborhoods and residents will come first with Ben.

He supports the business community by actively participating in  the Downtown Manteca Business Committee, Central Valley Hispanic Chamber of Commerce, Tidewater Southern Railway, and the Manteca Historical Society. The Knights of Columbus contribute to our community as a result of Ben’s leadership and efforts.

Ben is very creative and resourceful, always coming up with new and innovative approaches to difficult issues and challenges. He is truly a “team player” working with individuals and groups in supporting priorities and goals.

I know Ben will make a fantastic city councilman.
