STOCKTON — The East Union sophomore baseball team sent four pitchers to the mound Friday in a season-opening 8-0 win over Stagg on the road, and the they combined for an 11-strikeout, two-hit shutout.
Colby Seibel got the start and went four, allowing no runs on one hit and striking out five.
Andrew Austin (0 R, 0 H, 1 K), Justin Dias (0 R, 0 H, 2 K) and freshman Steven Gigli (0 R, 1 H, 3 K) all tossed one each to close it out.
East Union only walked one batter all afternoon.
“Phenomenal,” EU head coach Mike James said. “I’ll take that any day of the week.”
The Lancers racked up three runs in the first and sixth, and one more each in the second and third.
Caleb Towle went 1 for 1, and Jesus Ochoa picked up another knock.
Francisco Flores had a big afternoon, finishing 3 for 4 with three RBIs.
“It was a great way to start the season,” James said.
EU (1-0) hosts Patterson Monday.
In the win over Orestimba, Daylynn Penner tossed six innings, allowing four hits and three unearned runs to go with eight strikeouts.
Allison Smith was 2 for 3 with a run and an RBI, and Jessica Lewis went 1 for 3 with a run scored and an RBI.
Erica Candido (R), Alysia Atkins (2B) and Chelsea Bereta (2B) all went 1 for 3.
Against Franklin of Elk Grove, Penner and Bereta (2 K) combined on a two-hitter.
Michelle Arroyo walked twice and scored a run, and Randi Heriford walked and scored in the fourth.
Sierra had three base runners, all on walks.
“We definitely maximized our opportunities,” Sierra head coach Bill Faulkner said. “They were a really strong team. Our defense played well. Can’t say we’re happy with a tie, but we were fortunate.”
Sierra (3-0-1) travels to Ceres High tomorrow.
