The Ripon High basketball team found itself up against one of the storied Bay Area high school basketball programs, but the Indians were up for the challenge in a 40-37 win over Skyline High Saturday in the consolation final of the Granada Tournament.

Andrew Bonner led the Indians (2-2) with 12 points on four 3-pointers, while teammate Connor Jones chipped in with eight. Ripon’s Jared Ratto and Jake McCreath both added seven to the winning cause.

“We had to hang on at the end after blowing a seven-point lead,” Ripon head coach Rod Wright said. “We needed a win and we were able to get one.”

The Indians trailed 16-15 at the half, but responded with a 14-7 run to take the lead midway through the third quarter.

Ripon will be back at it Tuesday, when they travel to Manteca to take on the Sierra Timberwolves at 7:15 p.m.

Galt Tournament
Cordova 71, Ripon Christian 47
The Knights were able to grab a spot in the Galt Tournament’s consolation championship, but their good fortunes would end there in a 71-47 loss to Cordova Saturday.
Ripon Christian opened the game playing solid basketball, hanging with Cordova after the first period, trailing just 18-16. The Lancers would open things up after that, outscoring Ripon Christian 53-31 the rest of the way.

Logan Vos continued his excellent start to the season, turning in a 24 point performance for team-high scoring honors.

Ripon Christian (4-3) will have some time off before kicking off the Oakdale Rotary Classic at the end of the month.

Edison Classic
Edison 54, Manteca 46
Even with an inspired effort and solid productivity from the offense, the Buffaloes’ struggles continued in a 54-46 loss to Edison Saturda in the seventh-place game of the Edison Classic.

The Buffaloes (1-7) were linked 22-22 at halftime, but let things slip away with late offensive miscues, forfeiting a chance to stop a six-game slide.

“We are playing better with each game,” Manteca head coach Dave Asuncion said. “We just have to learn how to win games.

“We are right in them, but finishing off the game has been a troublesome area for us.”

E.J. Godfrey led the Buffaloes with 13 points, while Ben Odell finished in double-figures with 10.

Manteca will head north to participate in the Anderson Tournament beginning Thursday in Anderson.

Bradshaw Christian Tournament
Weston Ranch 80, Valley Ch. 57
The Cougars came out and put on an offensive clinic, starting with a ferocious first quarter and never letting up in a 80-57 Bradshaw Christian Tournament championship Saturday.

“We talked after our game (Friday) and I told them how disappointed I was in our team defense and our intensity,’ Weston Ranch head coach Ryan Bono said. “And tonight those two areas were the best I have seen from Weston Ranch in a long time.”

The Cougars cinched down on Valley Christian in a pivotal second quarter, holding them to just one basket for the entire second quarter until Valley Christian found their second basket at the buzzer. The Cougars had no such difficulties scoring, posting at least 20 points in three of the four quarters.

Dillon Alexander led the way with a game-high 27 points and 11 rebounds, while Andre Beard solidified his tournament MVP status with 20 points and a game-high 16 rebounds in the win. Alexander was also honored with a berth on the all-tournament team.

Senior Melvin Allen finished in double-digits with 11 points.

The Cougars will be back on the court Tuesday when they meet up with McNair High for an appeasing preseason matchup between the two Stockton programs.

Sierra 58, Lodi 39

The Timberwolves had no problem with the quick turnaround from their Friday win, blasting the host Lodi Flames 58-39 for the preseason win Saturday.

Will Ward led the charge for Sierra, finishing with a game-high 15 points, including an uncharacteristic  3-pointer. Guillermo Nunes continued his hot start, pouring in 14, while Edy Guzman finished in double figures with 13.

“We were trailing 11-6 early on and it seemed like we just took off from there,” Sierra head coach Scott Thomason said. “We had good production from our bench and it was really a great team effort.

“We went 3-0 this week and really put together a solid week when we need to.”
The Timberwolves will be back at it Tuesday when they play host to the Ripon Indians.
