The Ripon Christian boys golf team finished as the runner-up of Hilmar’s Yellow Jacket Invitational at Turlock Country Club on Monday.
Ripon was close behind in fourth place with a four-man score of 321. Oakdale topped the 25-team field with a 314 followed by Ripon Christian’s 318 and a 320 from third-place Granada of Livermore.
Two local individuals scored a 1-over 73, but Ripon Christian’s Trey Van Groningen got the edge for third place via tiebreaker. Vince Uecker of Ripon also carded a 73 to take fourth. Gregori’s Dillan Bahadur and Oakdale’s Nolan Harris were the top two players, each scoring an even 72.
Ethan Schenk added a solid 77 for Ripon Christian. Matthew Ubick and Carter Van Groningen each netted an 84. Ben Miller had the throw-out score 94.
Backing Uecker for Ripon was Jeremie Little with a 76. Marcus Atienza chipped in an 84, Ty Herrin had an 88 and Sam Stewart scored the throw-out 98.
BASEBALL
Manteca 12, Tokay 3
The host Buffaloes (3-0-1) erupted for seven runs in the third inning, and three young pitchers took it from there.
Freshman Nate Slikker got the win, striking out six while giving up a run on four hits and a walk over four innings. Sophomore Noah Navarro (two innings, three Ks) and junior Jesse Bella (inning) also got some work on the mound.
Preston Smith (two runs, RBI), Rex Watson (two runs, two RBIs) and Navarro (two runs, RBI) all went 2 for 3 from the plate. Cameron Jimenez hit 2 for 4 with a run and an RBI.
East Union 8, Weston Ranch 0
Zach Grabowski racked up seven strikeouts in five innings, and freshman Peyton Heath threw the final two innings to close out the combined one-hitter at Agostini Field.
Heath also highlighted the offense with a three-run double in the third inning. The Lancers (3-1) scratched across five in the inning to take a 6-0 lead.
Jackson Fay contributed two runs, three steals and an RBI.
Matteo Duron had the lone hit for Weston Ranch (3-2), which hosts EU on Wednesday.
Sierra 2, Atwater 1
After getting three of its first four games cancelled, Sierra (1-1) had a strong all-around outing in the non-league home win.
Ace pitcher Wyatt Bauer fired 10 strikeouts over five innings, and Collins Schluer fanned three in two innings as they combined for the one-hitter.
Bauer helped his cause with an RBI hit. Angel Valdez drove in the other run with a sacrifice fly.
Atwater (1-4) got its lone hit and run in the third inning, both from sophomore Juan Castro.
Lathrop 7, Stagg 6 (9)
The Spartans (2-3) avenged a mercy-rule loss with an extra-inning thriller.
They trailed 6-2 before rallying to tie it in the top of the seventh. Their go-ahead score in the ninth is also their only of the game.
Omare Cross led the attack, going 4 for 5 with a double, a triple, three runs and two RBIs. Andrew Lopez drove in three runs, and Mathew Rankin scored twice. Carson Scott contributed two hits and an RBI.
Winning pitcher Anthony Gallardo threw the final five innings in relief. He and starter Rankin did well to limit the damage despite walking 14 batter combined.
JV softball
Lathrop 17, McNair 16
Taylor Rios plated three runs and drove in another to help host Lathrop squeak out the win. Juliana Marquez scored one run and also had an RBI. Both finished 1 for 2.
