Sierra sneaks past Sonora for much-needed victory

Megan Gonsalves’ goal in the 23rd minute decided Sierra’s 1-0 win over visiting Sonora Wednesday and kept the Timberwolves in good position to grab a postseason berth.

Sierra (6-3-2, 10-5-4 overall) are in third place in the Valley Oak League, but Oakdale trails closely by a mere point in the standings. Those two teams were originally scheduled to square off Friday, but they will meet May 3 to close the regular season.

Under the circumstances, Sierra will gladly take its second 1-0 win over a dangerous Sonora team that has given other contenders fits all season.

“Sonora is a very decent team,” Sierra coach Manuel Pires said. “We had 22 shots on goal so the chances were there, but we’ll take the three points.”
