The Weston Ranch sophomore girls basketball squad handled its toughest test this Valley Oak League season, fighting off a resilient Manteca comeback in a 47-40 win Thursday in Stockton.

The Cougars (8-0 VOL, 15-2 overall) opened the second half of the league season by collecting another victory. Manteca had no interest in letting the Cougars walk off with their undefeated VOL streak intact, clawing back into the contest with a 17 point fourth quarter, yet still falling short.

Aljanea Brwon led the Cougars with 15 points, while teammate Candice Griffin chipped with eight and pulled down a game-high 14 rebounds. Courtney Smith was clutch down the stretch, converting on 4-of-6 free throws in the game’s waning minutes.

Jasmine Odell finished with a game-high 17 for Manteca.

East Union 50, Sierra 37

The Lancers (6-2, 12-4) jumped out on Sierra 28-15 after the first half and wouldn’t relinquish their grip in a 13-point win Thursday in VOL play.

Marina Salyer had a standout effort, leading all scorers with 20 points, while teammate Alex Scopas chipped in with nine.

Allison Walljasper paced Sierra with 17 and Valerie Nestor finished in double figures with 12.

Ripon Christian 54, Mariposa 19

The Knights (8-0 Southern League, 13-5 overall) had little trouble stopping Mariposa High, outscoring them in every quarter on their way to a blowout Southern League victory.

Tegan Manus outscored Mariposa single handedly with a 22-point effort. Manus also pilfered 10 steals in the contest for the double-double. Vanessa Vallo finished in double figures with 10.
