Ninety years ago, on November 20, 1926, the Manteca High football team defeated the Ceres High eleven in Ceres. The score was 7 to 0. The teams played on a muddy field and the aerial game was relied on by both teams. Manteca took advantage of the breaks and scored their touchdown in the first few minutes of the game. Carlson blocked a Ceres punt and Fay Forsell fell on the ball at the 32. Five plays later, Ed Forsell passed to Joe Bianchi for the touchdown. Fay Forsell converted.

10 years ago: November 29, 2006 – Building a 15-point lead after the opening quarter, Manteca High jumped on Stagg High 55-30 Tuesday evening in girls’ basketball action in Stockton. Sughey Cervantes registered a team-high 12 points and Alex Gonzales finished with 10 more for the Lady Buffs.
Julie Shutler (MVP) and All-leaguers Carol Diaz and Marjorie Langdon received golf awards at Sierra High’s Fall Sport s Awards night on November 26. Palmer Thiele and Jessica Flores were the MVP’s for Cross-country, while Sarah Corbett was the Best All-around Player on the volleyball team. Darnell Simmons (defense) and Ricky Victor and Scooter Gonzales (offense) received awards for the soccer team. Nyka Cartago and Stephanie Teunissen were co-MVP’s on the Timberwolf tennis squad.
At the East Union High Fall Sport s Awards ceremony, Kristina Hammarstrom and Shenice Vargas received leadership awards for the cross-country squad; Alyssa Deitrich was the volleyball MVP; Dustin Pfaff and Mayron Zelaya were football co-captains; Desiree Haroldsen was tennis MVP; Krysta Clark was Most Outstanding golfer; and Chris Gonzalez was soccer team’s MVP.
Stephanie Swift and Christin Gowan registered 14 points apiece as East Union High beat Bear Creek High Wednesday 60-47 in girls’ basketball action. Coach Brian Goulart’s squad is now 2-0 in the young season.
20 years ago: November 24, 1996 – Manteca High’s boys’ basketball team beat Downey High 56-39 Wednesday night. Jared House led the way to the win with 19 points, while Jarrod Schwartz added 12 points for Coach Paul Brogan’s Buffaloes.
The East Union High girls picked up their first basketball win of the season Tuesday night as they defeated Merced High 55-33 behind Cynthia Mathews’ 18-point effort in Merced. Jennie Bauer had a solid overall game with 12 points, nine rebounds and four steals for the Lancers.
The Sierra High girls’ soccer team picked up their second big win this season, trouncing Bear Creek High 7-0 behind the stellar play of Jessica Pires, Monica Pires and Ginny Teunissen, each of whom scored two goals. Coach Manuel Pires also praised Bobbie Roudebush, who added another goal for the Lady Timberwolves (2-1). SHS outshot its opponents 27-4.
East Union High’s soccer team evened its record at 1-1 with an impressive 3-0 win over Ceres High yesterday. Ja’Rae Mamorno and Meghan Harris scored the first two EU goals in the first eight minutes of the match.
East Union High handed out its Fall Sports Awards last night. Cross-country – Laura Dukas and Justin Willingham; tennis – Nichole Zacharias; volleyball – Jessie Hardcastle; soccer – Aaron Quaresma and Mike Uecker.
30 years ago: November 25, 1986 – After holding the lead for most of the game, the East Union High girls “ran out of gas” and Modesto High outscored them 16-4 in the fourth quarter to post a 46-40 victory in the Lady Lancers’ basketball season opener. Forward Tracy Lee led Coach Jim Waterman’s EU squad with 17 points and 12 rebounds in a losing cause. Kelli Horton added 10 points and 15 rebounds to the Lancer effort.
Named Most Valuable Players in their respective sports during Manteca High’s Fall Sports Social Monday night were: Tracy Cantrell, volleyball; Nate Getrich, cross-country and Leslie Gaynor, tennis.
The East Union High cagers outscored Tokay High 75-72 in Dalben Center in a back-and-forth slugfest Tuesday night. Gary Kron led the Lancers with 24 points, while Steve Hammarstrom netted 12 and Anthony Garcia had 10 points.
Downey High took a pulsating 49-48 win over Manteca High Tuesday night in the basketball opener for both schools. A bright spot for the Buffaloes was junior transfer Marshall Cannon, as the ex-Livermore High guard pumped in 21 points.
The Manteca High girls, despite an atrocious 15 percent shooting performance, relied on a menacing full-court press to rally in the final 1:30 to down Stagg High 36-32 in Stockton Tuesday night. Joette Lucas netted 11 points and Mary Foehringer netted nine steals off the press for Coach Butch Linn’s Lady Buffs.
East Union High honored its fall sports Most Valuable Players last night. They were: Mike Langton – cross-country; volleyball – Tracy Lee and Kelli Horton; and tennis-Marlene and Charlene Murphy.
50 years ago: November 23, 1966 – Manteca High celebrated Homecoming Friday in the best way possible. The Buffaloes unloaded on their arch-rival Tracy High to rob the Bulldogs of a clear-cut Valley Oak League title. The 33-13 loss for Tracy dropped them into a tie with Oakdale High for the VOL title. The Buffaloes, playing inspired football, racked up 20 points in eight minutes of the first quarter to dominate the action before a standing-room-only crowd at Schmiedt Field. Jerry McCarter returned a Tracy punt 70 yards to score, John Newton caught a 15-yard scoring pass from Tom Phelps and Rod McCracken returned a blocked punt 20 yards for a TD, all in the first period. Later scoring saw Steve Mendosa tally on a 25-yard run and Frank Teicheira punch over from four yards out. Steve Harmon booted three extra points.
Four Manteca High players were named this week to the all-VOL defensive team. Frank Teicheira was the only Buffalo selected on the offensive team. Teicheira, who led Buff rushers and scorers, was also named to the defensive squad, along with defensive end Rod McCracken and defensive back John Newton.
80 years ago: November 26, 1936 – Rewarded for their efforts on the Manteca High football team, eight local players went to the California-Stanford Big Game with Coach Marcus Swinney Saturday. The chosen players were selected by the Block M Society, a local block letter organization. Those who made the trip were: Donald Henson, Wilbur Rocha, Jim Desmond, Greg Brown, Pete Koftinoff, Rhys Smith, Jack Cardoza and Ronald Piper.
