Sharks sign D Brent Burns to 8-year contract extension

SAN JOSE AP) — The San Jose Sharks have signed star defenseman Brent Burns to a $64 million, eight-year contract extension.
Burns will count $8 million against the salary cap through the 2024-25 season.
The deal announced Tuesday keeps Burns off the free agent market next summer and with the Sharks for the long term.
Burns was a finalist for the Norris Trophy last season as the NHL’s top defenseman when he helped lead San Jose to its first appearance in the Stanley Cup Final. He led all defenseman with 27 goals and also 48 assists. General manager Doug Wilson called Burns one of the most dynamic players in the league.
He’ll make $10 million in the first four seasons of the deal, $7.5 million in 2021-22, $6.5 million in 2022-23 and $5 million in the final two years.
Burns has seven goals and nine assists this season for the Sharks.
