2nd inning surge gives Manteca win

Manteca used a six-run second inning and intimidating pitching to shut down Tracy American 10-0 in the consolation final of the District 67 Major All-Star Tournament hosted by Manteca Little League and set up a rematch today with Northgate in the championship round.

Most of the damage Manteca did in the second inning came with two outs. Garren Genilla led off the frame with a single and came in when Ethan Johnson belted a one-out double. Following a strike out, Jacob De Jesus tripled to plate Johnson for the first of five consecutive Manteca batters to reach base. Nico Ilardi (2 for 3, RBI), Isaiah Perez and Tyler Kiser each had an RBI single in that big inning.

Ilardi got Manteca on the board in the first inning when he singled, advanced to second on a passed ball and took third on a delayed steal. The throw to third sailed into the outfield, allowing Ilardi to score. Kiser (2 for 3, 2B, three RBI) doubled in the fourth inning to score Vince Hernandez and Isaiah Perez and Kiser scored later on an error.

Johnson pitched into the fourth inning and although he gave up a hit in the third, thanks to Hernandez at catcher he only faced the minimum through three innings as Hernandez gunned down Zach Guillen – who got a one-out single in the third – trying to steal second.

After Devon Williams reached for Tracy in the fourth on an error, Isaiah Perez came on in relief to strike out two, and again thanks to Hernandez, two strikeouts is all that was needed. Williams advanced to second on a passed ball and Hernandez caught Williams off the bag at second and picked him off with a rocket toss to Ilardi.

Manteca will face Northgate in the championship round this morning at 10. A Northgate win ends the tournament and a Manteca win forces a winner-take-all game Sunday at noon.
