TRACY — Tony Gonzales’ single in the seventh inning broke up a no-hitter, and Leighton Pangilinan’s ensuing home run to right took away the shutout.
But it was too little, too late for Ripon Babe Ruth’s 16-18-year-old Aces, as defensive miscues were too much to overcome in their 4-2 loss to the Tracy River Dogs Thursday at Monte Vista Middle School. The loss marked Ripon’s seventh straight since winning the season opener 5-4 in extra innings against Modesto on May 19.
Tracy southpaw pitcher Bret Maddox was sterling from the mound, as he struck out eight in 6 1/3 innings. His only blemishes were the hits given up to Gonzales and Pangilinan. Steven Ramos closed it out for the save, and he struck out the final batter to seal the victory.
The Aces wasted a solid pitching performance from Hayden Koch, who struck out two and scattered five hits in five innings. Only one of Koch’s four runs was earned. Pangilinan threw a scoreless sixth in relief.
Tracy took advantage of a two-out error in the fifth to score two insurance runs off of back-to-back singles from Robert Emerson and Josh Frea.
