HAYWARD – Ripon resident and incoming Ripon High senior Samantha Conway closed out the Junior Golf Association of Northern California’s Skywest Golf Tournament with an impressive round of 84, earning a co-second-place finish in her division Thursday at Skywest Golf Course.
Conway’s 12-over-round was just six strokes off the lead, landing her a respectable runner-up finish in the association’s 17th major event of the season.
“It was definitely a big stage, and there was a lot of supporters out there, so it really made the competition tougher,” Conway said. “I felt that my drives were going really good and my putting was solid as well.
“So I was pleased with my round.”
Conway opened her round on Skywest’s front nine, turning in a 42 without a birdie. Conway’s round picked up a little after the turn, shooting another 42 on the more challenging back nine, complete with her only birdie of the round.
“On the first hole I was on the green of a par-5 in four,” Conway said. “I sunk about a 40-footer for par and that got me going.
“It was a really great feeling.”
The tournament held nine flights of competition, with Conway participating in the girls 15-17-year-old division. The runner-up finish will bring Conway’s summerseason to a close, transitioning her into her final season at Ripon High.
“I really did a lot better than I expected,” Conway said. “I just got out there and was hitting the ball good and it turned out to be my best tournament score so far. This will be my last tournament for the summer, so now I’m just looking forward to my senior year of high school and competing for my team.”
