MOUNTAIN HOUSE — Northgate’s Dominick Garcia belted a three-run home run in the first inning Saturday morning, but Salida battled back and then held off a late rally to win 11-8 in opening-round action of the District 67 50/70 Tournament of Champions at Wicklund Park.

Trailing 11-7 going into the bottom of the seventh, the first two Northgate batters were retired bringing Devin Teicheira to the plate. Teicheira, Isaac Fernandez and Ryan Medina (RBI, run) all singled with Teicheira scoring on Medina’s hit. With Fernandez on third and Medina on second, the tying run struck out giving Salida the 11-8 win.

In the first inning Medina and Matthew Mendoza walked with Medina coming in to score on an error off the bat of Danny Olaguibel (two runs, RBI). Garcia (4 for 4, four RBI, home run, double) then homered to score Mendoza and Olaguibel to make the score 4-0.

Back-to-back singles by Daniel Garcia (3 for 4, two RBI, two runs) and Chayton Moleno (3 for 4, RBI, two runs) helped give Salida three runs in the top of the third to come within 4-3. In the bottom of the third, a double by Garcia and singles by Olaguibel, Tony Sanchez (3 for 4, run) and Jake Machado gave Northgate a 7-3 lead. Salida scored eight runs over the next three innings.
