Terry Dickman, 52, started his CrossFit regimen in December 2008 to get in shape.

Little did he know it was going to ignite his old competitive fire.

Last weekend at UC Irvine, the longtime Manteca resident placed third in the 2010 CrossFit Games Southwest Regional Qualifier and is in a good position to the world finals set for July 16-18 at the Home Depot Center Sports Complex in Carson.

“I would have just been happy being in the top 10, so I was pretty surprised and excited because I placed better than I thought I would,” said Dickman, who trains and co-owns the CrossFit Excel gym in town. “There were some pretty fit 50-year-old guys there. It’s crazy seeing a bunch of 50-year-old guys with six packs.”

The 5-foot-11, 195-pounder, who has dropped around 40 pounds since joining, competed in the new Masters Division for athletes aged 50 and older. He previously placed 172nd out of 255 competitors in the more competition Open Division during the Northern California Sectional Qualifer on March 27-28.

Last weekend, 82 entered the inaugural Masters competition and 59 competed. In the Masters Division, competitors are put to the test in three events: the Double Under Helen (jump roping), the Max Thruster (kettlebell swings) and C2B Cindy (pull-ups).

Dickman’s best finish was second in the Max Thruster. He also placed ninth in the Helen and eighth in the Cindy. Each individual’s place in every event is added up to compile an overall score, the lowest being the best.

Dickman’s score will be compared with others from the 13 regions (Central East, North Central, Northeast, Northwest, South Central, Southeast, Southwest, Australia, Canada, Eurppe, Africa, Asia, Central/South America), and the best 15 will congregate in the finals.

The Southwest Region consists of California, Arizona and Hawaii. Dickman currently sits in fourth place as the

“It’s looking really good for me,” said Dickman, a football player and former record holder in the pole vault at Manteca High. “I’m pretty positive I’ll make it because ours is usually the strongest region. But you’ll never know.”

CrossFit is a strength-and-conditioning program that is functional for everyone, from children to seniors and from weekend warriors to Olympic-caliber athletes.

Danny Lehr and Nick Hobby make up the rest of the triumvirate of co-owners CrossFit Excel.

“Once I started I was immediately hooked on it. It’s just a lot of fun, really interesting. It just has a whole different atmosphere to it.”
