Ripon Chiefs fend off Linden Lions second-half rally

The Ripon Chiefs varsity team held off a late charge by the Linden Lions to secure a 20-14 win in Motherlode Valley Football League action.

A 15-yard touchdown run by Ryan Daggett as time expired in the first half gave the Chiefs a 14-8 halftime lead. Daggett threw touchdown passes of 38 yards to Derric Roy and a second-half touchdown pass to Roland Davis. Austin Nguyenand Quin Cunha had key receptions for Ripon.

 

Junior varsity

Chiefs 42, Lions 0

Thanks to great offensive line play by Korey Budde, Boogie Barnett, Mason Terry, Myles Beato, Caleb Delgado and Owen Grabar, Nico Ilarda was able to throw three touchdown passes for the Chiefs.

Ripon’s Aiden Benzinger had touchdown catches of 5 and 14 yards and Danny Hernandez one of 55 yards. A 1-yard scoring plunge by Aaron Wood capped a 98-yard Chiefs drive with key runs by Benzinger and Dorian Dougherty along with big receptions by Benzinger and Matthew Padilla. Grant Wiebe added a 35-yard touchdown run.

Hernandez had an interception return of 50 yards for a touchdown. Dougherty added a fumble recovery and Beau Dionio an interception. Nathan Valdez was 3 for 4 on conversion-kick attempts.

 

Novice

Chiefs 14, Lions 6

Blake Nichelson and Isaiah San Nicholas scored touchdowns for the Chiefs.

San Nicholas recovered second-half kickoff by Steven Barrios to lead to the only second-half score for Ripon.

Caleb Johnston, Ethan Day and Jory Sarratt spearheaded the Chiefs defense that held the Lions without an offensive touchdown.
