No bed time for those who want to be first in line

Roxy and Norman Phillips are anxiously awaiting their first-ever Black Friday.

The Modesto couple mapped out the early morning, perusing ads to find items on the Christmas wish list.

First, the Phillips plan to stand in the Home Depot line to take advantage of the special sale for major appliances.

“We’re hoping to get (to Home Depot) by 3 a.m.,” Roxy said.

Added Norman: “We probably won’t go to bed that day.”

The only reason the Phillips are able to partake in Black Friday, according to Roxy, is that her husband has the day off. “We’ve wanted to do this for years,” she said.

Black Friday marks the start of the traditional Christmas shopping season. Although not an official holiday, many employees, in fact, request this day after Thanksgiving off to join the frenzy of bargain hunters for door-buster deals.

The Phillips, who were in Manteca Wednesday to take their children to Santa’s Wonderland located in the Bass Pro Shops, are hoping to get a bulk of their holiday shopping done on this day by making the rounds to the other retail stores.

Many of the retailers have already decorated for Christmas, getting into the holiday spirit weeks in advance.

Whisper Gray is taking a different course of action.

Born and raised in Manteca, she and her husband brought their four children into the various local businesses as a way of getting Christmas gift ideas.

“We’ll come back (without the children) to get the Santa gifts,” Gray said.

Along the way, she also noticed some good bargains during the pre-holiday sales.

“We’re avoiding Black Friday,” Gray added.
