LATHROP - The snow has started falling in Lathrop.
And in about a week it’ll get so cold that Dell’Osso Pond will have a 4-inch thick layer of ice.
Snow and ice in Lathrop in November can mean only one thing: Dell’Osso Holidays on the Farm is back for its second season. Holidays on the Farm opens on Friday, Nov. 26, and runs through Sunday, Jan. 2.
New this year near the foot of Mt. Dell’Osso - the artificial snow tube course on a 100-foot-long run with a 200-foot drop - is an ice skating rink.
“We even have our own mini Zambino (to resurface) the ice every 90 minutes,” noted Susan Dell’Osso.
Helping christen the ice on Saturday, Nov. 27, will be members of the Stockton Thunder professional hockey team. Those who happen to be on the ice at the time will be able to skate alongside the players.
The ice rink will have a set charge of $12 for skating and the use of skates on Friday, Saturday and Sunday, for those 8 and older, and $10 for those 7 and under. The Monday through Thursday rates are $2 less for each category. Those who have their own skates are being charged $2 less than the stated rates.
“There’s no time limit,” Dell’Osso said of skating time.
It is a first come, first served basis for ice time.
Dell’Osso said interest is higher than she expected.
“We didn’t realize there were that many avid ice skaters in the area,” she said.
Ninety-minute snow tubing sessions are $16.50 for on line purchases and $17.50 for walk-ups. The snow play area is free although conditions may vary. Both the snow tubing hill and play areas are both covered for protection from the elements.
Other attractions that will be in operation include the zip line, the aerial rope course, Santa Village complete with real reindeer and Santa, train rides, Christmas tree sales, and the 240 lighted displays and 200-footlong lighted tunnel that makes up Lights on the Farm.
You can take your car through Friday and Saturday for $12 or Sunday through Thursday for $10. You can also see the lights using an open air tram or hayride for $5 per person. The Dell’Osso Express train ride that takes riders along the lights is $3 per person.
The Holidays on the Farm starts up just 26 days after the 13th annual Pumpkin Maze closed for the season. The maze this year drew 110,000 visitors. Attendance was down 20 percent from last year due primarily to the fact it rained every weekend in October.
Last year, the national organization promoting agri-tourism had Dell’Osso Farms as its third most popular destination in the country with almost 140,000 visitors.
Dell’Osso Farms is located at the Manthey Road off Interstate 5 between the San Joaquin River and Interstate 205.
