A black lab named “Fire Bird” is on the running board of the city’s historic fire truck when it visited his River Berry Drive neighborhood.

Manteca celebrated the countrywide National Night Out Tuesday evening at some 58 homes from the Del Webb at Woodbridge community to Southland Mobile Home Park just off Highway 99.

Del Webb accounted for some 30 homes.

Police and fire department staffers drove around the community with their vehicles – including SWAT and motorcycles to fire engines – that drew the attention of the small fry and the senior citizens alike.  All offered to answer questions of the residents pertaining to their jobs.

Those registering for the evening had the option of requesting who they wanted to see. They included attractions such as McGruff the Crime Dog to the SWAT team, and K-9 unit.

It was more difficult for the fire department to respond since they have had eight of their personnel on the wildfire lines for the past several weeks with others working overtime shifts in Manteca’s stations.
