Walter Bernard Aubrey III, of Stockton, stands surrounded by police and fire department personnel after his arrest in the 600 block of Milgeo Avenue In Ripon following a short high speed pursuit in a stolen Toyota Rav4 southbound on Highway 99 shortly after noon Tuesday.

A Stockton man in his mid-20s – Walter Bernard Aubrey III – was arrested at 12:30 p.m. Tuesday in the 600 block of Milgeo in Ripon following a short police chase on Highway 99 from the Stockton area driving a reportedly stolen Toyota Rav 4.

Following him were patrol units from the Manteca Police Department, Ripon Police and the California Highway Patrol.  Manteca officers said they were called by the Deltarat Auto Theft Task force officers for assistance as they had Aubrey in sight but were driving unmarked vehicles and couldn’t pull him over.  They needed a black and white patrol car to make the stop.  Ripon officers caught up with the suspect near Jack Tone Road.

Aubrey reportedly took the downtown Ripon Main Street off ramp to the top of the Second Street bridge and swerved around two stopped vehicles ahead of him glancing off one and driving to the Frontage Road on the north side of the freeway where he ultimately jumped out of the car and fled on foot.

One Ripon business man told the Bulletin later in the afternoon that the fleeing motorist drove by him at about 60 miles an hour on the frontage road and then he said he watched him jump out of the car and run, jumping over a fence and running into the StorQuest Storage business and jumping onto its roof to evade pursuing officers. He added there had also been a woman passenger he had seen in the passenger seat of the vehicle.

Officers arrived with guns drawn and took Aubrey into custody from the roof of a storage building without further incident. He was transported to Doctors Hospital in Manteca claiming shortness of breath with a policeman riding along in the ambulance.
