CITY TACKLING LINT & NOISE POLLUTION
Crothall Laundry vows to correct plant issues

Part of the state-of-the-art commercial operation at Crothall Laundry in northwest Manteca.

If you think your dryer is loud and has a lint issue, its nothing compared to Crothall Laundry on Airport Way just west of the Del Webb neighborhood.

The industrial laundry that caters primarily to healthcare clients has been told by the City of Manteca that they are exceeding noise standards based on decibel readings taken behind a residential soundwall on the eastern side of Airport Way.

At the same time a large accumulation of lint has been found on the roof.

The lint can be a pollution issue if it is picked up by the wind and potentially a fire hazard as well.

The issue of the Crothall Landry operation came up during Tuesday’s Manteca City Council meeting.

A Del Webb resident whose home backs up to the Airport Way sound wall and who is among those dealing with the problem wanted to know the status of the city’s efforts to address them

Community Development Services Director Chris Erias said Crothall Laundry is willing to work to correct the problems. However, progress is being slowed down a bit given they do not own the building. They lease it from CenterPoint Properties.

As such CenterPoint is being brought in to help put a solution in place.

Erias confirmed the laundry was exceeding the city’s sound level limits.

The issue is at night after 7 p.m. when the sound level the city allows is lower to accommodate people trying to sleep.

Del Webb residents have shared that the noise has made it impossible to enjoy their yards in the evening or — depending upon the location of their home — to even sleep at times.

This is not the first time the city has received noise complaints about the laundry

Shortly after it opened in 2014, Del Webb neighbors complained about the lack of a promised sound buffer of trees and that the noise exceeded allowed levels.

At the time the made several decibel readings and found nothing that violated city standards.

Things have changed since 2014 when there were 115 employees working in the 60,150-square-foot facility that serves primarily hospital accounts. They were handling the equivalent of 21 million pounds of laundry annually in 2014.

Since then, Crothall is processing  more laundry within the facility that has a capacity for 55 million pounds.
