The family of a 21-year-old man that was shot and killed in broad daylight near Woodward Park last week is asking for the public’s help in laying him to rest.
Mekhi Richardson, a 21-year-old East Union High School graduate with a 3-year-old son, was identified by family members in the victim of the shooting on Mono Street last week that rocked the Woodward Park neighborhood.
So far two people have been arrested in the case.
Police believe that 21-year-old Marquis Williams was the shooter and is being charged with murder, while 21-year-old Troy Lewis was taken into custody by Manteca Police SWAT officers on charges of concealing evidence.
Richardson was discovered by Manteca Police lying in the street suffering from a gunshot wound, and while officers delivered medical aid until EMS arrived, he was pronounced dead at the scene.
Family members have described him to various media outlets as somebody that loved life – telling ABC10 that he loved to ride horses, tell jokes, and play football.
Richardson played football for the East Union Lancers during his high school years.
Last week, his family launched a GoFundMe to help pay for his funeral expenses and to create a fund for his 3-year-old son Kavon. People can donate by visiting https://gofund.me/9b1b28a4. Information about other ways to donate to the family are also listed on the page, and as of Thursday afternoon the effort has raised $4,900 of the $10,000 goal.
“Mekhi’s death has left his parents, siblings, son, child’s mother, grandparents, and cousins heartbroken,” the family wrote in the post requesting donations. “His family and friends are having a hard time getting through this.”
