Ripon High celebrated homecoming Friday with a big win over visiting Orestimba.

RHS — in no particular order — scored three touchdowns, came up with a safety, had an interception and recovered an on-side kick leading up to halftime, winning convincingly in Trans-Valley League action, 43-7.

"This one was big," said coach Cole Williams as his team likely punched its ticket to an at-large berth in the Sac-Joaquin Section Division VI playoffs with its fourth overall win of the season and strong strength of schedule.

Against the Warriors (0-5 TVL, 4-5 overall), Ripon (2-3, 4-5) put together strong efforts in all facets of the game.

Offensively, Kael Rangel sparked the ground game with 110 yards on 13 carries, while twice reaching the end zone. Quarterback Andrew Shaw completed seven of his nine passes for 117 yards, two TDs, and no interceptions. His 32-yard scamper setup the game's first score.

RHS experienced a slight stumble early on. Rangel's apparent 70-yard TD run on that first possession was erased on a holding penalty. Ripon coughed the ball, making a rare misstep on this celebratory evening.

Junior defensive back Josiah Perez returned the favor, intercepting a pass in the end zone to extinguish the threat.

From there, RHS marched 80 yards keyed by Shaw's big run. Shaw then hit Ace Dougherty on a 16-yard scoring strike to help give Ripon a 7-0 first-quarter lead.

Ripon continued to attack on its next possession as Shaw hooked up with Gavin Duran on a 64-yard touchdown.

Up 14-0, RHS went on a scoring spree midway through the second quarter. Defensive back Ben Vita intercepted a pass at midfield, with Rangel carrying most of the load from there. The senior fullback followed up on his 14-yard run to the Orestimba 15 by powering through for a score with under three minutes left before the intermission.

Ripon caught Orestimba by surprise by executing the on-side kick. Moments later, Dougherty scored on a 20-yard run,

The Warriors got the ball back inside their 5 yard line following the ensuing kick due to a penalty. Ripon made them pay with Dougherty, Perez, Xabriel Reyes, and Joshue Gonzalez being among the defenders converging on the two-point safety.

Ahead 30-0, RHS added on more score with Shaw weaving his way through defenders for his 39-yard dash to paydirt.

"Our team met the challenge," said Williams. "We asked them to play fast, play hard, and play a full game."

Ripon closed out the scoring in the third quarter with Rangel pounding the ball in from 10 yards out to make it a 43-0 game to that point.

RHS, altogether, came away with four turnovers, including a pick from Christopher Alfaro.

Ripon will now look to keep the momentum rolling next week, facing neighboring Ripon Christian in the TVL finale.
