Manteca will continue leasing 5 solid waste collection CNG trucks

Manteca is renewing the lease of five side loading solid waste trucks through November 2027 for $1,100,000.

The City Council will be asked to approve the lease extension when they meet tonight at 6 p.m.

The city initially leased the trucks from Big Truck Rental new for a year in October 2024 to allow for the switch to weekly collected of green/organic waste and recyclables along with garbage.

If they had opted to buy the trucks that run on compressed natural gas Manteca produces at the wastewater treatment plant, they wouldn’t have been able to take delivery for 18 to 24 months due to a backlog of orders.

Solid Waste currently operates a fleet of 21 automated side loader (ASL) collection vehicles. On a typical service day, 17 to 18 ASLs are required to maintain residential collection operations throughout the City.

In addition, an average of two vehicles are unavailable each day due to scheduled maintenance or repairs.

The solid waste division had planned to purchase the lease-to-own ASL trucks during Fiscal Year 2026-27; however, the enterprise fund was not projected to meet the required reserve level, and funding was not available to complete the purchase.

As a result, the department has had to continue renting the vehicles longer than originally anticipated.

A solid waste truck can serve 450 houses each day.
