An alert parent that caught wind in a Microsoft Teams online chat of a student at Joseph Widmer Elementary School in Lathrop having a gun on campus and notified Lathrop Police on Thursday – triggering an immediate response by the agency.

The reports ended up being unfounded after the student in question was thoroughly searched and no firearm was found.

According to the agency, when the parent notified school staff of the potential threat, a school resource officer was already on the campus and immediately worked with staff to identify the student. After questioning the student and then searching them, their belongings, and the immediate area where the student was contacted, no gun was found.

In a post announcing the incident the Lathrop Police Department encouraged parents to monitor their children’s social media and online activity and to report any suspicious activity that is discovered.

No additional information was released about the incident.
