The four 15-story silos of Spreckels Sugar were imploded in 1997 to make way for Spreckels Business Park. The silos were located where the Manteca Target store is today.
Thirty years ago Spreckels Sugar — which was intertwined with Manteca’s prosperity and history for 75 years — fell victim to changing sugar beet economics and tougher California air quality rules.
