It’s been five strong years since Manteca Idol first got off the ground as a unique way to both showcase local talent and raise money for the Boys and Girls Club.
And while the faces of those in charge have changed, the campaign is moving along as strong as ever – expanding this year to add a Junior Idol contest that helps give younger singers that might be intimidated going up against older and more established vocalists.
According to Director of Operations Melanee Scarborough, the pool of talent in Manteca is deep enough to field both of the competitions simultaneously and still give those who come out and support the venture every single week the show they expect and deserve.
“I think that this is a community that enjoys music as well as the performers themselves and it shows with our turnout every year,” she said. “Having something like this in our community not only showcases the large amount of local talent that we have here but gives us another venue to enjoy that music as well.
“And at the end of the day, all of the money is going to charity.”
Tryouts for the upcoming season for both age groups (Junior Idol contests can be 12 or younger) begin on Saturday, July 11, at 10 a.m. at the Boys and Girls Club of Manteca. An application must be completed, and those under the age of 18 must have a parent present to give their consent. At that point each of the singers will get a chance to perform a 30 second a cappella song that will determine whether they’ll be moving on.
Those who make the cut will be asked to pay a $10 entry free to help offset costs, and Junior Idol contestants will have the option of paying $12 and getting a free membership to the Boys and Girls Club.
The tryouts will again be held on Saturday, July 28, and Saturday, July 25 – both at 10 a.m. at the Boys and Girls Club.
Manteca Idol 2008 Christine Acosta will be returning as the Master of Ceremonies for the entire run of the contest – which is slated to begin on August 5 and will carry on through the fall on Wednesday nights at Chez Shari from 7 to 9 p.m
But instead of sending the contestants home one at a time when they reach the finals, the last five Manteca Idol hopefuls as well as the three Junior Idol candidates will perform every week and have their points tallied.
The winner will be crowned on Monday, November 23, on the first night of the Boys and Girls Telethon – an event that will be held live on cable television by Comcast.
