Ripon gears up for National Night Out event

National Night Out is still a month away.

This community-wide event is held on the first Tuesday of August. NNO at the Community Center, 334 W. Fifth St., is also scheduled – from 6 to 9 p.m. – at the same time as the Ripon City Council meeting.

In order to avoid conflict, elected leaders will discuss at tonight’s 7 p.m. open session to either change the time of the Aug. 5 meeting to 5 o’clock or cancel it altogether in order to attend the activities.

The meeting will take place in the Council Chamber at 259 N. Wilma Ave.

NNO is a free event featuring hot dogs and bottled water at no charge, and is sponsored by the City of Ripon and Ripon Ministerial Association.

Friendly rivalries are rekindled as the police department takes on the fire district in a watermelon-eating contest.

The tug-of-war is another attraction of NNO, which has something for everyone.

A car show featuring classic vehicles along with the some of the City’s emergency vehicles will be on display.

Youngsters can have fun while cooling off in one of the inflatable waterslides. They can also enjoy face painting, crafts, and karaoke. Ditto for the adults, who can also play Bingo with a chance to win any of the donated prizes.

The agenda also includes:

• A resolution to adopt the Triennial Performance Audit of the City’s transit system for the three-year span of June 30, 2010 through June 30, 2012.

• Authorizing Mayor Chuck Winn to sign an agreement with Liebert Cassidy Whitmore for training and consulting services.

• An ordinance to set the amount of money raised by taxes necessary to carry on the various functions of the City of Ripon.
