Vida Loca Skateboards will host its second art show / auction on Friday at the Main Street Café and Coffee Company, 1464 W. Yosemite Ave., Manteca.

On display and available to the highest bidder are custom-designed and crafted skateboards. All proceeds will go to Boarding for Breast Cancer.

Frank Alvarado, co-owner of Vida Loca Skateboards, designed six of the 40 blank boards purchased specifically for the event.

“The others went to members of the community,” he said on Monday. “All are hand painted – they did an awesome job.

“I was blown away by their effort.”

The art show / auction event will go from 6 to 9 p.m. On hand will be live music and an actual auctioneer to conduct the bidding for the skateboards.

Refreshments will also be available along with the Boarding for Breast Cancer booth, providing information including early detection.

Alvarado took active part in the cause when his long-time friend, Katy McKenzie, was diagnosed with cancer. She died two years ago.

“I grew up with her,” he said. “Her mom (Joann) and my mom are best friends.”

Alvarado has taken part in several events to raise money for Boarding for Breast Cancer including the past three years of skateboarding around Lake Tahoe and a community relay this past summer along the Tidewater Bike Path.

As for the art show / auction, Vida Loca Skateboards is inviting the public to attend this event that will celebrate life and feature artists from throughout the community.
