Stolen car in Hercules killing found near Seattle
SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — The search for a car that was stolen from a home in a usually tranquil suburb of San Francisco where a retired schoolteacher was killed has come to an end outside of Seattle, and a man and his wife wanted in the unrelated shooting of a Los Angeles County sheriff's deputy have been arrested, police said.
Darnell Washington, 24, and his 25-year-old wife, Tania Washington, were taken into custody and the car stolen from the Hercules home of Susie Ko was recovered Wednesday, said King County sheriff's Sgt. Cindy West.
Ko, 55, was found dead on the floor of her home by neighbors who were called by her husband, Kelvin, when she failed to pick him up at Oakland International Airport late Friday.
After her body was found, Hercules police said the only thing that appeared to be missing from the home was the family's Subaru station wagon.
Suit aims to block San Francisco subway line
SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — Opponents have filed a lawsuit to block a controversial subway line in San Francisco.
The group Save Muni filed suit Wednesday, hoping to stall or kill the 1.7-mile Central Subway.
The Superior Court suit claims a planned station entrance at Union Square violates a city ban on non-recreational uses in city parks.
A spokesman for the Municipal Transportation Agency says the project has followed all laws.
The suit was filed a day before Thursday's expected announcement of a $942 million federal award for the Caltrain-to-Chinatown line. The Chronicle says it's the final chunk of money needed to build the $1.6 billion subway.
Santa Clara police officers fatally shoot man
SANTA CLARA (AP) — Santa Clara police say officers shot and killed a knife-wielding man after responding to a domestic disturbance between a father and son.
Police Lt. Matt Hogan said officers on Wednesday night found a 41-year-old man holding the knife and arguing with his 66-year-old father.
After mediating the dispute, Hogan said officers started to leave before hearing the two men start yelling again.
Three officers opened fire after the son threatened the father's life with the knife, Hogan said.
Police did not release the names of the suspect, victim or the officers involved.
The officers are veterans with a decade or more of experience on the force, police said.
The shooting is under investigation by the Santa Clara County district attorney.
Gay ex-Boy Scout gets $20K check, spot on 'Ellen'
SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — A Northern California Boy Scout who was denied the opportunity to become an Eagle Scout and kicked out of his troop after he came out as gay has secured a considerable consolation prize: a $20,000 check for college and a national television audience.
Ellen DeGeneres booked 18-year-old Ryan Andresen of Moraga as a guest on her talk show Thursday, which was National Coming Out Day. After talking with Andresen about his experience, DeGeneres surprised him with the check provided by online photo publisher.
Andresen's mother, Karen Andresen, launched an online petition last week to get the master of her son's to sign-off on a project that would allow him to become an Eagle Scout. The Boy Scouts of America has a policy prohibiting gay members or troop leaders.
