Burglars foiled by kids hiding in closet
FREMONT (AP) — Police say three men who broke into a Fremont house were nabbed after kids hiding in an upstairs closet called 911.
Police arrested 18-year-old Kenneth Denson; 25-year-old Demarkus Benavides and 18-year-old Marvin Matthews Friday on suspicion of conspiracy to commit a crime, first-degree robbery and other charges.
Fremont police said a 16-year-old girl and her 10-year-old brother saw three men break into their home and locked themselves in an upstairs closet and called 911.
The suspects heard the kids, police said, and banged on the closet door and ordered them to come out.
Officers arrived shortly thereafter and the suspects fled on foot. Police found a car with stolen property at the scene.
Man fatally shot in SJ gang-related shooting
SAN JOSE (AP) — San Jose city leaders say they are ramping up their efforts to stop the latest wave of violence after the city's 33rd homicide of the year.
Police say an 18-year-old man was shot and killed Thursday in an apparent gang-related shooting, the city's eighth homicide in the past 11 days.
Thursday's homicide was also San Jose's 13th gang-related killing of 2012.
Police Chief Chris Moore said the city is allocating $800,000 from its general fund so that officers can work overtime to contend with gang-infested areas.
No charges for pill-smuggling lawyer
REDWOOD CITY (AP) — A Northern California lawyer arrested for smuggling pills to a jail inmate won't be facing charges.
It turns out the pills were the over-the-counter sleeping aid melatonin.
The San Francisco Chronicle says 43-year-old Erika Jordening passed the pills to 43-year-old Aaron Rauls during a confidential lawyer-client meeting at the San Mateo County jail in Redwood City.
The lawyer was arrested and booked for investigation of conspiracy and bringing contraband into a jail facility.
Lab tests later determined the pills contained melatonin.
Concord teen pleads not guilty in fatal crash
CONCORD (AP) — A Concord teenager has pleaded not guilty to felony vehicular manslaughter charges for fatally striking a father and daughter who were riding bicycles on a sidewalk.
David Rosen, 17, of Concord entered his plea in juvenile court Friday.
Authorities say Rosen was driving in Concord when his SUV struck 41-year-old Solaiman Nuri and his 9-year-old daughter Stoorai Nuri. The Afghan native's 12-year-old daughter was also hit and suffered minor injuries.
Prosecutors say if convicted, Rosen could be held in a locked juvenile hall facility until he turns 21 before he is released.
The victims' family had wanted Rosen charged as an adult.
