Thomas D. Bates, 75, entered into rest on  December 22, 2016 in Modesto. He was born on October 24, 1941 in French Camp to the late William and Mabel Bates.
   He leaves behind his children, Thomas Bates “Skipper” Jr., James Bates, Ronald Bates, Joann Purtle, Robert Bates, Kenneth Bates and Matthew Bates. In addition, he was blessed with 11 grandchildren and two great grandchildren. Thomas is also survived by two siblings, Harry Bates and Peewee Buckalew.
   Thomas was a Modesto resident and previously of Manteca. He retired from the military as a Sergeant 1st Class E7 for the United States Army. Thomas worked for LOF Glass Company in Lathrop, retiring after 30 years of service. He enjoyed the outdoors, especially fishing and camping. Thomas loved the simple pleasures in life, socializing, a warm afternoon with a cold Budweiser and cooking for family. He was patriotic and pro-military which brought a deep love and respect for his country, to say the least, Thomas was extremely proud to be an American. Thomas care for others was like no other. He was extremely giving with a loving heart but always with a little bit of stubbornness, mix together, he was the perfect recipe for a devoted friend, father and grandfather. He will be deeply missed.
   P.L. Fry is honored to serve the Bates family.  A visitation will be held on Thursday, January 5, 2017 from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. at P.L. Fry and Son, 290 North Union Road, Manteca.  He will be laid to rest with Military honors on Friday, January 6, 2017 at
1 p.m. at San Joaquin Valley National Cemetery, 32053 McCabe Road, Santa Nella, CA.
