RIPON — Defending state champion Ripon and former state champion Sierra took to the field Friday at Stouffer Field along with West of Tracy, Bear Creek of Stockton and Lodi for a round-robin scrimmage to get ready for the upcoming football season.

Timberwolves offensive coordinator Jeff Abrew was glad to see teams back on the field.

“It was great to get the kids out and playing again,” Abrew said. “I thought we improved as the night went on.

“The kids play with a lot of energy and they are great kids to coach. At the end of the day this was just a scrimmage, and now we know what we need to improve on.”

Victor Serna played wing and defensive back for Sierra.

“We made some improvement tonight,” Serna said. “We started off kind of slow but in the last session against Ripon we really stepped it up.”

Indians coach Chris Musseman saw some things that need improvement.

“I think tonight went OK,” Musseman said. “We have to learn to keep our composure when things aren’t going our way. When things are getting chippy out there we have to be better about that.

“We showed that we can do some things but we also showed some things that we really need to work on as well.”

Ripon’s Daniel Espinoza was in the middle of the field at linebacker and fullback.

“I think it went pretty good,” Espinoza said. “I had a couple of mistakes on offense and that is why we have scrimmages — to get the mistakes out before game time.

“The O-line was great.”

Next Friday, the Indians host East Union and the Timberwolves travel to Hughson.
