MARIPOSA – An onside kick had given the Mariposa High Grizzlies hope.

But just as he had done throughout the game, Will Kamps proved to be a drive-killer.

The sophomore lineman's final sack came at an opportune time for Ripon Christian in their Southern League opener. The Grizzlies had pulled within 27-21 with less than 3 minutes left and recovered the onside kick.

On fourth-and-10, Mariposa quarterback Aaron Lerma was dropped by Kamps and teammate Ben Couch. Ripon Christian ran out the clock, fleeing the hills of Mariposa with a 27-21 victory.

Andrew Brown scored three touchdowns and quarterback Billy Marr added a 2-yard sneak for the Knights, who outgained the Grizzlies on the ground 294-4.

Brown finished with 28 carries for 287 yards. He also had 45 yards receiving.

The reigning SL MVP scored on runs of 6, 9 and 35 yards. The last pushed RC’s lead to 27-7 midway through the third.

Mariposa came roaring back, though. Kamare Bailey scored on a 2-yard run to make it 27-14. In the fourth Lerma (10 of 21, 158 yards, two touchdowns, two interceptions) connected with Jadin Battles on a 10-yard scoring pass to pull the Grizz within one score.

Kamps and Couch had RC covered, barreling through the line for a game-clinching sack on Mariposa’s final drive.

Ka,mps finished with nine tackles, including 4.5 sacks.
