The Sierra football team handed host Modesto its 11th straight defeat last Friday, 24-7, at Johansen’s Dan Gonsalves Stadium.

The Panthers (0-3) did manage to end another dubious streak by scoring a second-half touchdown. Their previous four losses were shutouts.

Quarterback Jaysen Martinez led a balanced attack, completing 11 of 16 passes for 182 yards and a 15-yard touchdown connection with D.J. Shepherd (three catches, 46 yards). He also hit Blama Kamara five times for 115 yards.

Venn Piedad powered the running game with 92 yards and a touchdown on 12 carries. Martinez added 34 yards and a touchdown on four attempts.

Ryan Serratos kicked an early 30-yard field goal, and the Timberwolves (2-1) led 3-0 after the first quarter and 17-0 at halftime.

The defense allowed 199 yards. Damien Salazar spearheaded the unit with eight tackles, three for losses, and a sack. Damian Densmore also had eight tackles, one for loss.

Kian Mejia reeled in an interception for a second straight week, while registering six tackles. Isaac Kempf contributed seven tackles, and Dominic Balugo chipped in four tackles, two for losses and a sack.

Sierra has a short week Gregori (2-1) on Thursday, ending its non-league schedule Thursday at Gregori (2-1).

River Islands 46, Modesto Christian 20

Daryl Carpenter set a single-season school record with 423 passing yards, finishing an efficient 23 of 28 with four touchdowns at MC’s Roy Blakeley Field. The senior completed passes to six different receivers.

Receiver Darien East continued his early-season tear, contributing six receptions, 145 yards and two touchdowns.

Running back Lucas Ruiz totaled three touchdowns, rambling for 76 yards on 11 rushes and another 70 yards on four receptions. Mikey Figueroa (two receptions, 51 yards) also had a touchdown catch. Christian Dell’Osso caught six passes for 51 yards. Sophomore Gabriel Ramirez Jr. racked up 82 yards on two catches.

The Crusaders (0-3) dropped their ninth consecutive loss but were able to score their first points of the season and the second quarter.

Freshman quarterback Deven Green (5 of 14, 161 yards) completed two touchdowns passes for Modesto Christian, and senior Cristian Gonzales (2 of 4, 8 yards) pitched in one.

Jameel Harrison had five catches for 165 yards and two scores. Sophomore running back Tamaseula Mahafatau stretched a catch 56 yards for a TD.

Modesto Christian was limited to 29 rushing yards.

River Islands (3-0) travels to Mountain House on Friday for its final non-league contest.

Tracy 56, Lathrop 0

The visiting Bulldogs (3-0) rolled to a 35-0 halftime lead.

Lathrop (1-2) struggled with ball security throughout, losing three of its six fumbles.

Johnathan Jackson highlighted the Spartans’ offense with five carries for 38 yards. They’ll look to bounce back in two weeks in their Western Athletic Conference opener with visiting Johansen (2-1)
