Frank Joseph Thrall, Sr., aged 81, passed away peacefully on September 1, 2026. A devoted family man, proud veteran, and generous friend, Frank lived a life defined by resilience, service, and deep love for those around him.
Frank was born on July 17, 1945, in Bad Kissingen, Germany, as a Hungarian refugee in the immediate aftermath of World War II. As a young child, he immigrated alongside his mother and sister, first to Canada and later to the United States. He spent his elementary school years in Southern California before moving to Northern California for high school, the region he would proudly call home for the rest of his life.
In 1963, Frank answered the call to serve his country by joining the U.S. Army, completing his Basic Training at Fort Ord, California. He spent most of his enlistment stationed in France. This deployment offered a profound personal experience, allowing him to reconnect with family members who had been separated by the fractures of World War II and the Cold War. Following his Honorable Discharge, Frank returned to Northern California to begin the next chapter in his life.
Frank was an avid music lover and concert goer during the late–1960’s music scene in San Francisco. He saw many artists, including Jimi Hendrix, Janis Joplin, and Cream, at venues like the Winterland Ballroom and Fillmore Auditorium.
In 1968, Frank married the love of his life, Catherine Marie Hall. Together, they built a beautiful life, raising their two children, Frank, Jr. and Tanya Renee, in Union City, California. Frank was a devoted husband and a loving father, always putting his family first.
Frank worked for many years as a journeyman press operator for Duplex Products in Union City. After retiring, Frank relocated to Ripon, California in 1999. Frank was a man of diverse passions. He was an avid horseback rider, loved horse camping in the Point Reyes area, and spent countless hours building and admiring his model train collection. He was also a fiercely passionate and rare breed of sports fan, splitting his loyalty by enthusiastically cheering for both the Oakland Raiders and the San Francisco 49ers. His greatest joy in his later years was his role as a doting grandfather to Trace, Emerson, and Charlie, all of whom he adored unconditionally.
Frank’s legacy of warmth, strength, and devotion will live on in the hearts of his wife, children, grandchildren, and all who knew him.
Frank was preceded in death by his mother Elizabeth, sister Katrinka, and daughter Tanya. Frank is survived by his wife Catherine, his son Frank, Jr., and his three grandsons.
