The East Union High Lancers enjoyed a strong fourth quarter en route to defeating Johansen, 36-6, in Friday's homecoming affair.
"We still have a few things to clean up," said EU coach Jason Stock following the non-league game.
The Lancers (2-0) overcame a sluggish opening quarter. They even dodged a bullet, erring on special teams on punt coverage.
Albie Menchaca reversed that turnover, recovering a fumble by the Vikings (2-1) at his 25 yard line —his second such recovery after coming away with the loose ball at the start game — in turn, setting up the game's first score.
Enter Dante Tafoya, who went under center in second quarter.
The sophomore quarterback delivered an apparent desperation pass, connecting with Gunnar Fay at midfield.
The junior wide receiver raced untouched to the end zone to complete the 72-yard pass play.
He was just warming up.
On East Union's next possession, Tafoya hit Erick Cortez in stride for a 29-yard score.
Yandel Gutierrez's extra point kick made it 14-0.
The Lancers relied on their defense for the better part on three quarters.
"Our defense played great for a second straight game," said Stock.
Included were linemen Nathan New and Ervin Douglas. They helped in keeping the pressure on the Johansen passing attack in the third quarter.
In the fourth, East Union took advantage of a turnover on special teams.
Austin Lee picked a chunk of yardage on an end-around. Tafoya delivered a scoring strike to Fay, who had eight catches for 169 yards.
The Vikings followed that up with their lone score of the game.
Trailing 21-0, quarterback AJ Banuelos connected with Manthayus Looney Napper on a 17-yard TD.
EU answered back with Menchaca racing 60 yards to paydirt.
Tafoya closed out his stellar outing by hitting Cortez for another score. Gutierrez, rather than kicking for the extra point, ran the ball in on the conversion.
Tafoya, meanwhile, completed 11 of 16 passes with one interception for 211 yards while tossing four TDs.
Stock noted that this outing was different from the opener. His team kept the ball on ground while running 26 offensive plays.
EU unveiled a potent passing game this time around.
