It was an historic night at Lathrop High.

In Friday's Sac-Joaquin Section Division 5 opener, the No. 7-seeded Spartans playoff victory, trouncing No. 10 Foothill, 47-0.

"We just tried to keep it simple by running out of our base offense," said Lathrop coach Ryan Teicheira. "It ground and pound.

'We ran it inside and outside — we ran it hard throughout the game."

The Spartans (8-3) racked up 401 total yards on offense, with 377 of that coming on the ground.

Defensively, Lathrop yielded 130 yards to the Mustangs (7-4), who managed just 8 rushing yards.

Andres Muqhar (85 yards on 13 carries with two touchdowns) and Jimari Dove (85 yards on eight touches, one TD) spearheaded the

Spartans' ground attack.

But it was Julio Garcia (80 yards on 10 pops) who got the offense untracked

On that first possession, Lathrop marched 65 yards on eight plays, capped by Garcia's 23-yard burst.

Dove, on defense, thwarted some trickery by Foothill, stopping Tomas Norse from scoring on the halfback pass on that first play by the Greater Sacramento League champs.

The Spartans' defense behind Alejandro Rivera and Justus Otis had the Mustangs reeling from that point, getting the ball back on downs.

Dove helped give his team a 14-0 early lead, scoring on a 37-yard run.

The Spartans bumped up the lead in second quarter. Garcia scored on a 12-yard run and  Muqhar took the ball in from 7 yards, making it 26-0 at the break.

Lathrop kept it going in the second half.

Muqhar scored from 15 yards out, with Adrian Padilla following that up by recovering a fumble.

Lineman Dominic Corral, at 6-2, 260 pounds, got into the act by taking a lateral and rumbling 34 yards to inside the Foothill 5. He scored moments later to boost the lead, 40-0.

The Spartans closed out the game with Dove coming up with a pair of interceptions and Sean Teu hitting paydirt with a 13-yard run.

Next up for Lathrop is a trip to No. 2 Casa Roble in next week’s quarterfinals.
