A state qualifier last year, Skiles is ramping up for a return to Clovis.
And the senior has added the 100-meter dash to her agenda.
Ripon’s standout hurdler played a big part in the Indians claiming another Trans-Valley League championship last Thursday at Hughson High, and Skiles picked up a few more individual accolades along the way.
She earned a third straight league title in the 300-meter hurdles, setting a personal record at 43.69 seconds. That is also the fastest time recorded in the Sac-Joaquin Section this season.
Skiles’ winning 100 hurdles time of 14.22 seconds is only two-hundredths of a second shy of the PR she set the week prior. She is ranked second in the SJS and 10th in the state for event.
Skiles was also part of the winning 4x400 relay with Olivia Ellis, Kaiya Kroutil and fellow returning state qualifier Clara Schoolland. They clocked a season-best time of 4 minutes, 0.17 seconds, which ranks them No. 5 in the section.
Then there’s the 100, an event that she had ran for just the third time this season. Skiles set a personal record at 12.27 seconds, the 13th fastest time in the section.
Skiles, who has recently committed to Cal State Fullerton, said that the sprints have helped improve her times in the hurdles.
“I actually ran the 100 when I was a full-time sprinter my freshman year, but I dropped it when I started hurdling,” Skiles said. “I wanted to run it all these years and finally got the chance to. I’ve been trying to incorporate sprinting into the 100 hurdles, because I was not fully grasping the concept of sprinting through the hurdles, and running the 100 will help that.”
While focused improving her marks, Skiles is enjoying the team success. Ripon has garnered the TVL girls title in all four of her seasons, though the Indians shared it last year. This week, they’ll look to reclaim the Sac-Joaquin Section Division V championship after winning it in 2022 and 2023. Last year, Ripon was edged out by new-school power Twelve Bridges of Lincoln.
“It definitely means a lot, especially for my last year,” Skiles said of the team achievements. “We have a really strong group of seniors and just a strong group in general. We were co-champ last year as a girls team, so we came out this year with a vengeance.”
The SJS Division IV-V trials are today at Riverbank High, with the finals taking place Friday. The divisional winners for each event along with the next four best competitors based on their marks advance to the SJS Masters meet set for May 23-24 at Folsom High.
Skiles is gunning for her fourth divisional gold medals in the 300 hurdles and mile relay. She is also a two-time defending champ in the 100 hurdles and intends to continue competing in the 100.
Ripon’s graduation is on the same night of the Masters trials, but she plans on vying for another berth to the state meet.
“I’m really excited to go back,” she said. “I was nervous going into the meet last year, being younger and not having competed at that level. Now, I’ve been to bigger meets and feel more prepared. I’m excited to do my best. I’ve been tracking the state leaderboard, and I want to go back and turn in a strong performance. I’m hoping to make it to the finals and get a place on the podium.”
