Five area schools were represented in the three-day Sac-Joaquin Section Swim Championships.
Only two individuals made it back to the finals at Elk Grove Aquatics Center.
Ripon High freshman Vianna Hopper and Boen West competed in frosh-soph consolations races on Friday and set personal records in the process.
West won the 200-yard freestyle consolation heat for a ninth-place overall finish in 1 minute, 49.04 seconds, which was faster than all but two competitors in the championship final. He also made the 100 butterfly consolation final, placing second (10th overall) in 55.14 seconds.
Hopper PR’d in the 50 free consolation, winning the heat in 25.68.
The boys trials took place on Wednesday, and the girls on Thursday. Hopper and West each swap four races in the trials.
Hopper came up a few ticks shy of qualifying for the 100 free consolation final, clocking the 18th fastest time in the trials in 57.94.
Joining Hopper in the 200 free relay (17th, 1:52.17) and 400 free relay (18th, 4:17.93) were Rori Staley, Hunterbelle Browne-Lyles and Copper Russell.
West swap the 200 free relay (22nd, 1:42.48) and 200 medley relay (29th, 1:58.27) with Timothy Corgiat, Ethan Hsieh and Michael Madrid.
Corgiat also took part in the 100 backstroke (27th, 1:04.77) and 100 fly (49th, 1:08.39).
Matthew Lee was Ripon’s lone varsity entrant. He placed 25th in both the 100 free (49.31) and 200 free (1:52.86) preliminaries.
Sierra’s Valley Oak League champion girls team was also well represented in the trials.
Bianca Fraser swam in four varsity events. As an individual, she placed 25th in the 100 fly (1:03.08) and 29th in the 200 individual medley (2:24.25).
She was also part of Sierra’s varsity 200 medley relay (21st, 2:05.31) with Abigail Fraser, Rylee Danel and Charlene Trinh, and the 200 free relay (26th 1:52.07) with Abigail Fraser, Trinh and Sadie Herrera.
Phoebe Burke and Elianah Zhou were four-race section qualifiers at the frosh-soph level. Burke placed 19th in the 200 free (2:09.84) and 23rd in the 50 free (27.04). Zhou was 18th in the 100 back (1:08.68) and 37th in the 200 IM (2:38.27).
Both were part of the Timberwolves’ frosh-soph 200 medley relay (18th, 2:06.77) and 200 free relay (28th, 1:56.03) along with Jazlynn Martinez and Angelica Soto.
The Sierra boys made an appearance in the varsity 200 free relay. Travis Moore, Erik Johnson, Logan Busalacchi and Bayen Ballew came in 44th place in 1:48.64.
Ripon Christian had two frosh-soph girls qualifiers in Hollis Fasani (200 IM, 26th, 2:34.21; 50 free, 24th, 27.09) and Angie Battisfore (49th, 50 free, 28.10).
Lathrop’s Dominic Bossen competed in the varsity boys 100 breaststroke (46th, 1:06.67).
River Islands freshman Olivia Kohn swam in the frosh-soph girls 200 individual medley (24th, 2:33.16) and 100 free (35th, 1:00.76).
Schools winning team championships: Granite Bay (Division I boys, frosh-soph boys), Del Oro (D-II boys), West Campus (D-III boys), Davis (D-I girls), St. Francis (D-II girls), Bear River (D-III girls) and Franklin (frosh-soph girls).
The top three placers in each varsity event and others who meet or surpass at-large standards qualify for the California Interscholastic Federation State Championships set for May 14-16 at Clovis Olympic Swim Complex.
TRACK & FIELD
SJS Division IV Trials
Lathrop will have a large contingent at the SJS Divisional Finals this coming Saturday at Sacramento City College.
The Spartans competed in the Division IV trials this past Saturday at Oakmont High in Roseville. The top 12 placers in the 3,200 and 4x800 relays advance straight to the SJS Masters meet. In all other events, the top nine make the divisional finals.
Riley Gier has his ticket to Masters secured after placing fifth in the 3,200-meter run with a personal-best time of 9:44.59. He also clocked the second fastest time in the 800 preliminaries (1:59.91).
The 4x800 boys relay is also Masters bound. Eshan Clair, Frank Hoffman, Caleb Montiel and Malachi Gonzales took eighth in 8:52.87. Gonzales was a heat winner in the 400 at a personal-best 51.57.
Treydon Santos advanced to the 110 hurdles, 300 hurdles, and high jump finals. Pablo Peña had the second farthest mark in the shot put trials at 45 feet, 4 ½ inches.
Avner Faaaliga (shot put, discus), Logan Terry (discus), Jayden Howard (pole vault), Maddox Ramos (pole vault), Luis LiBran (triple jump) and Kainalu Tabellija (triple jump) also made the finals.
Melia Lewis led Lathrop’s girls, advancing to the divisional finals in four sprints — 100 (fourth, 12.87), 200 (second, 26.16), 4x100 (fourth, 51.30) and 4x400 (4:16.08). Faith Allen (100 hurdles, 300 hurdles) and Erin Chunn (high jump) were on the 4x100 relay along with Esmeralda Sanchez.
Morgan Emery registered the top time in the 800 (2:22.98), and she helped the 4x400 relay (Aleena Basi, Zakia Booker, Melia Lewis) finish with the second best time (4:16.08).
Brianna Valencia (300 hurdles), Jazmine Sorrell (shot put), Clarisse Gomez (high jump), Gianna Barragan (high jump), Alyvia Galano (pole vault), Moira Ramones (high jump, triple jump) and Kira Davis (triple jump) round out Lathrop’s divisional finals qualifiers.
