The Manteca High freshman football team ran wild over Christian Brothers Thursday night at Guss Schmiedt Field, as tailback Anthony Cota scored four times in a 33-7 win.

Cota finished with 204 yards on 21 carries and scored on runs of 23, 59, and nine yards. Quarterback Ryan Fox closed out halftime with a 42-yard fade to Cota up the right sideline for the star running back’s fourth touchdown.

Manteca led 26-0 at half.

Fox scored the opening touchdown on an 18 yard run, and Eddie Smith added 65 yards on eight carries.

“We came out firing on all cylinders and showed Christian Brothers what Manteca Buffalo football was all about,” Buffs head coach John Schaefer said. “We smacked them in the mouth on the third play from scrimmage, forced and recovered a fumble at the CBHS 30-yard line and never looked back.”

Defensively, Manteca was its usual swarming self and Smith led the way with eight tackle and the first-quarter fumble recovery.

Derrick Benson and T.J. Galdos-Reis also collected fumble recoveries, and Roger Rhodes picked off Christian Bros. in the fourth.

Jeremy Randall, Karl Huckaby, Smith and Kenneth Williams all had sacks.

“We really stuck people on defense, and anytime you create four turnovers and don’t fumble the ball on offense, you usually win the game,” Shaefer said. “This was a great way to start out the season.”

Manteca (1-0) renews its rivalry with Tracy Thursday at Wayne Schneider Stadium.
