East Union’s 8-1 victory, its first of the Valley Oak League season, looks one-sided at the surface, but visiting Lathrop made the Lancers work for it on Tuesday.

Four of East Union’s individual wins could have went the other way.

Daniel Osoteo accounted for the Spartans’ only point, as she defeated Mandi Roberts 7-6, 6-4 in the No. 2 singles match. East Union’s Araceli Gonzales was well-tested in the No. 1 showdown. She got past Jaynah Palma, 4-6, 6-4, 6-4.

Lathrop dropped two tough contests at No. 3 and 4 singles. In the No. 3 matchup, Jenna Zuniga of East Union needed to win two tiebreakers to knock off Deja Andrades, 7-6 (8-6),7-6 (7-4). Deanna Baker gutted out a three-set win over Angela Alegado, 6-1, 5-7 (10-8), 7-6 (7-4).

The Lancers (1-2) took the fifth and sixth singles matches with less of a struggle, with Marissa Moreno (6-2, 6-3) and Alexis Phillips (6-0, 6-1) coming up victorious.

Chloe Benham and Fabiola Magana won the No. 1 doubles match for East Union 6-4, 7-5 over Kim Victoria and Hannah Byrd. Haley Swingler and Tabatha Barrington were ahead 6-5 when Lathrop’s No. 2 tandem retired. Vanessa Hamilston and Matharin Lee punctuated East Union’s triumph with a 6-0, 6-2 win.
