There wasn’t a whole lot that the East Union sophomore could do wrong in its last Valley Oak League of the season against crosstown rival Sierra High.
After pouring on seven runs in the first two innings, the Lancers cruised to a 13-3 victory in five innings, capped off by freshman Jesus Esquivel’s’s two-run home run that brought the mercy rule into effect.
“I think that we had a very successful season, and the kids showed a lot of improvement from their freshman to sophomore year,” East Union head coach Mike James said. “It was a true pleasure coaching these kids, and it was the most fun I’ve had in 28 years as a coach here at East Union.
East Union (12-4 VOL, 15-7 overall) relied on a combination of steady hitting and solid pitching by starter Zach Carrillo to do its damage. While Carrillo struck out three, allowed three runs, and only walked two. Brock Swift finished the game 3 for 4 at the plate with two runs scored.
Bryson Stonum finished the game 2 for 3 and also netted a pair of runs.
Lopez was one of three batters with a double for the team, while Janelle Butler and Jenna Howard both also had success at the plate.
“Overall, it was a good win for us today and a good way to cap off the season,” Lathrop head coach Ed Fang said. “We played good sound softball, and being able to finish the season with six wins the way that we did was huge for our program.”

With Diana Lopez’ 11 strikeouts leading the way, the Lathrop Spartans finished their season with a 10-0 smashing of the Ceres Bulldogs Thursday afternoon.Lathrop 10, Ceres 0
