Trailing visiting Oakdale by three scores at halftime Thursday, the Manteca freshmen took the second half kickoff and scored – eventually.

The Buffaloes’ scoring drive capped by Andrew Yzaguirre’s 1-yard plunge was long and methodical, chewing up 11 minutes and 25 seconds. Unfortunately, that would be the only score for Manteca in a 27-7 Valley Oak League loss at Guss Schmiedt Field.

Yzaguirre picked up 86 yards on 23 carries. Mason Gibson, Luis Rivera, Colton Stonum and Paul Gaines all played well on defense for Manteca.

East Union 35, Woodland 7

The Lancers racked up 303 yards on the ground with a balanced attack and Dylan Lee threw for a pair of touchdowns in non-league action.

Lee (6 for 7 passing, 98 yards) found Ace Avelar (three catches, 38 yards) with a 29-yard touchdown pass to start the East Union scoring and added a 13-yard touchdown throw to David Juarez (two receptions, 28 yards).

David Flores (nine carries, 81 yards) scored from 13 yards out, Emilio Perez (seven carries, 57 yards) had a 2-yard touchdown run and Jhamir Jackson (four carries, 84 yards) galloped 71 yards for a touchdown. David Juarez added two receptions for 28 yards.

The Lancers totaled 303 yards rushing while East Union held the Wolves to just 136 yards of total offense.

Matthew Mejia led the Lancers defensive charge with 12 tackles. Renald Bacigalupi added nine stops, Flores and Lee six each, Nick Ridgwell five, Rafael Espinosa, Nick Luna, Jackson, Angel Ramirez (fumble recovery) and Anthony Sy interception three apiece with Abel Cha (forced fumble), Vincent Olague and Aaron Velazquez all getting two stops each.
