Lathrop battles back to stun Weston Ranch

WESTON RANCH — It took a team effort for Lathrop High’s sophomore volleyball team to rebound from its first-game letdown and win a three-game thriller (19-25, 25-18, 15-12) against Weston Ranch Thursday.

The Spartans (2-3 Valley Oak League) had three standouts that contributed at the net and from the service line.

Anselma Rodriguez led the way with two kills, 16 service points and four aces. Alayna Asuncion also recorded four aces while spearheading the attack with three kills. Eliana Young added two kills and two aces; and Briana Lopez chipped in two and three.

Sonora 2, Manteca 1

In Sonora, the Buffaloes (2-2, 5-3) hung tough until the end, when Sonora was able to break free from a 10-10 tie in the deciding third game and prevail — 25-23, 15-25, 10-15.

Jimi Guibor and Erin Kennedy each slapped down four kills, and Jessica Reeder had a big all-around night with 14 assists, six digs and three aces. Mia Ramirez contributed four aces.

Oakdale 2, Sierra 1

At Sierra, the visiting Mustangs shook off the early cobwebs and came back to win in three — 24-26, 25-11, 15-8.

Allison Armstrong tallied 10 service points and a block for Sierra. Emily Doran pitched in two kills and two blocks.

At Sierra, Alexis Davis led the T’Wolves with four service points, and defensive specialist Elena Flores and outside hitter Valerie Nester played well.

SOCCER
Sierra 6, Ceres 1

At Sierra, the host Timberwolves (2-0, 2-4) got scoring contributions from six different players.

Scoring for Sierra were Jared Parham, Jesus Rodriguez, Emmanuel Elijah, Trevor Nunes, Christian Reyes and German Tenorio.
